Altavista Linking Triggers

Tell a Friend About This Page

Overview: Learn how to determine how many sites and which sites are linking to yours according to search engines

Many search engines have enabled webmaster support such that website owners can easily determine which sites are presently linking to your own site. Because many search engines rank based on popularity of your site (based on volume of people who link to you), this factor is quite important to webmasters to determine their level of success. Below, we demonstrate which trigger words search engines recognize, sample usage and other tips and tricks to determining which websites link to yours. In addition, we added a direct form such that you may perform a query directly from this page.

Altavista Triggers
Search Engine: Altavista (Read Our Submission Tips)
URL: http://www.altavista.com (New Window Opens)
Special Trigger(s): http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?q=link:YOURDOMAIN.COM
Explanation: This trigger will indicate to the search engine that only pages which have a link returning to yourdomain.com should be returned. Altavista will return to you the number of pages which link to your website in addition to a listing of each URL. Depending on your success, the more sites that link to you, the better chance your site will be ranked higher in search engines. The syntax for this command is the trigger name "q=link:" plus your domain name. Please see the example below for additional help.
Tips and Tricks: Altavista has become rather cluttered as it strives to become a portal. To just get your results, with no ads or other distracting clutter, we suggest you use Raging search to get your results. Raging.com is a slimmed down version of Altavista with all the clutter cut out. Once you familiarize yourself with the syntax of this search engine trigger, we suggest you use Raging.com to deliver your results (Click Here to Open Raging.com in a new window).
Gain the Competitive Edge: No matter how many links you may have from other websites, the more you have the better. As an added incentive, when a web site links to you, kindly submit their site to this search engine as the extra link that appears to your site will help boost your rankings.
Example: http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?q=link:submitcorner.com (View Result)
Try Your Site: Check out who is linking to your web site in this search engine. Enter your domain name in the box below and we'll display your results right away.
Notice: For best results, enter your domain name only such as www.submitcorner.com or submitcorner.com. Not all search engines accept a full URL to specific pages on your site.
Assessment Tools: Use our Assessment Tools and we'll query any search engine for you with a single click. Easily track down if your indexed, who's linking to you and who are your competitors from one consolidated form.
Other Triggers
Assess Your Site Indexing: Many search engines have enabled webmaster support such that determining if your website is catalogued can easily be done. Find out if Altavista has your site indexed already and which pages of your site are catalogued. Click here to learn more about Assessing Your Site Indexing with Altavista.
Identifying Competitors: Once you've determined that your website is catalogued in this search engine, you should also determine how you compare against your competition. Find out who Infoseek believes are your competitors using the competitor identification triggers. Click here to learn more about Determining Who Are Your Competitors with Altavista.
